Greening Mediterranean Tourism

The Mediterranean region has been for years the world's leading tourism region in number of tourists and in number of beds, Emergence of new destinations may change this status, but the experience and knowledge acquiered by the tourism industry and the authorities in the Meditarranean Region, especially in the western area, makes this one of the most interesting tourist areas to be studied.
Changes will not come only from the emergent destinations but also from the environmental changes due to the climate change. This may be one of the issues that we could discuss in this group
The long history of the Meditarranean Tourism Industry causes also the difficulty to introduce changes very rapidly, because consolidate markets resist to change. Spain, as a leading destination has been working in the last decade to achieve better quality in tourism services through public and private campaigns. Recently the government has started a new strategic plan for the coming years (Turismo 2020) where sustainible development and environmental and social conecern, are the leading goals with competitivity. This would be als an interesting discussion, to see how Mediterranean destinations have to face changes from a Greening Tourism point of view.
