Looking for Best Practices in Greening Tourism

Oriol Miralbell

How will climate change affect yout home?

Whilst writing this post news are hitting hope again because China and Russia have refused in the G8 meeting at l'Aquila (Italy) to reduce Co2 emissions.

Though nature is stronger and more insistent than politicians and climate change will force deaf and blind to react against reality. We're facing an uncertain future that will bring social and economical changes that even with the financial crisis we have not seen yet. I don't believe in frightening people to foster reaction, but I cannot admit that looking to another side can be the best solution to avoid disasters.

Scientists have been working hard in proving that climate change is here to hit our world, as we live it now, and we have many evidences already. The question is: Can we do something to soften the consequences of climate change?

We are almost at the limits of the period where things can be done! Why isn't no-one acting then? Probably decisions like the ones that should be taken to change things, are too hard to be taken. They probably would impact deeply in our economies and they would not only affect dramatically our social life but also our wealth and our lives. Cars are among the most polluting sources in our cities, but only few decisions are taken to foster reductions of a 15% of CO2 emissions in the coming years.

Fossil energy is the other big polluter, though alternative green energies are growing too slowly and energy savings initiatives are also insignificant.

Our economical model based on an permanent increase of productivity has no plan to reduce energy consumption or a more efficient use of energy, but our industries move in a permanent growth of wasting raw materials and energy. We are now a 50% more people on earth than 21 years ago and we know that we should need 4 planets like ours if all the people in this planet would live like the ones on the first world.

Where's the logic of this passive reaction of our leaders? What are Chinese and Russian leaders thinking whern they refuse to act in favor of a more eco-friendly economy. It seems obvious that decisions shall be taken at a global level and with a large consensus-

I''m sure that the responsibility to force our leaders to react is ours and we should be aware that we cannot resign form it.

I found a site with an example on HOW CLIMATE CHANGE WOULD AFFECT IOWA. It is worth to interact with it and realize what can happen also to our home. Maybe when people become more conscious they also become more determinant.
